Holderness Bowlers Selected For Yorkshire

John Benson and Mark Goodfellow included in season opener.

May 4th

John Benson and Mark Goodfellow have been selected in the Yorkshire County BA season opener. Yorkshire face Derbyshire in the first group game of the 2009 Middleton Cup, at Long Eaton BC in Derbyshire.

John is selected at second wood amongst three Nafferton BC bowlers, in a rink skipped by county captain Chris Kelly. Mark has been selected to play at lead in the rink to be skipped by Dave Stroughair from York.

Cliff Holmes would have been selected for the same game, but due to a holiday had to withdraw his nomination for this match. Cliff had also initially been selected to play in the National County Two Fours. Which he has now been selected for regularly, over the last couple of seasons. But the date of this match is also whilst Cliff is away on holiday, therefore Cliff has had to reluctantly withdraw from this match aswell.

Jackets to arrive early May

Initial delay of order, but manufacturer to rectify situation.

April 29th

The new bowling jackets that the club ordered earlier in the year, are due to arrive in the next couple of weeks. Originally due the last week of April, the manufacturer failed to ship them with other orders due to the country. The jackets are now being flown in as a special delivery, and should be with us early season.

The jackets have been ordered through Kaylo Prosport, who now supply a lot of the English national team match clothing. These will be available to members at the cost of £15.

Holderness Retain The Antler Shield Trophy.

Comprehensive win over keen rivals Springhead BC in this years final.

September 6th

The Antler Shield final, held at Fenner B.C. Marfleet Lane, saw Holderness retain the trophy with a very comprehensive win over arch rivals Springhead. On a lovely afternoon, which was a pleasant surprise after the weather of the last two days, the green played very well and is a credit to the club and their efforts to improve their facillities.

Holderness lead from very onset of the match, indeed only slipping behind once on the third end. Two rinks lead all the way through their encounters, only the rink skipped by Jim moulds had a match where the lead swung both ways through their 21 ends. But the rink came through in the end to win their match. The rinks skipped by Tim Winter and Nigel Hodgson had somewhat easy games that they lead from the outset, and stretched their leads further and further as the afternoon went on.

Mark Suffers Narrow Defeat In Northern Counties Semi Final.

Creditable performance but quest ends in defeat.

August 30th

This weekend saw the Northern Counties B.A. Championships held at the Houghton Dairy Lane Bowls Club, Houghton-le-Spring in Durham.

Mark Goodfellow who represented Yorkshire, lost to the experienced Andy Kirtland (Darlington RA B.C.) representing Durham. Mark started the game well and played a lot of quality bowls on a green that allowed precision bowling.

Some quality bowling by both men, proved an entertaining match for the spectators wo were gathered around this rink in particular. Mark after leading early on in the match by four shots, took a lead to 18 v 13. By this time Andy had to change some of his tactics, and elected that Mark take the jack after Andy's next score.

Although Mark was still bowling well, and bowled steady draw shots, Andy elected to play weight with his last bowl on many of the remaining ends, and seemed to pay dividends for him. In an exciting finale to the match, the score 20 v 20 going into the last end, Mark bowled a lovely first wood but Andy drew this off with a quite superb bowl. Mark had to then try to dislodge the head, but unfortunately was just under greened, and slipped under the head.

Andy then went on to win the Northern Counties Title beating the Cumbrian representative in the final 21 v 18.

Holderness Lose In Marshall Shield Quarter Final.

Dissappointing defeat at hands of Bert Keech BC.

August 10th

Holderness lost to Bert Keech in the quarter final of this seasons Marshall Shield, away at the York based club.

Holderness where without three key players for this tie, through a combination of illness, holiday and work commitments.

The three players Sam Winter (work), Mark Goodfellow (holiday) and Ray Coates (illness), were greatly missed as two of them provide experience at back end play, and two rinks had to be juggled around for their absence. Ray was a late withdrawal due to illness, and further complicated team selection.

This though should'nt take anything away from the players who did turn out and give their all for the club, but on the day just couldn't manage to cross the winning line. The players who were absent may not have made any difference to the outcome of the tie, and the club feel the only thing that contributed to the defeat was playing the match away.

Holderness Ease Through To Marshall Shield Quarter Finals.

Comprehensive Victory at Walkington in Zone Final.

July 22nd

Monday night saw a strong Holderness team take on Walkington in the zone final of this seasons Marshall Shield. Being away at the villagers is never an easy result to predict, but few would have predicted the score after 4 ends on Jim Moulds's rink. After easing into the game with a couple of solid ends, the rink with a rejuvinated Cliff Holmes at lead, after his short holiday, Gordon Elliott at two, Mick Binks at three, and Jim Moulds at Skip, gained a full house score of 8 Shots.

Looking across the scoreboards at 15 ends, the Holderness team looked in very little danger, with Jim moulds's rink going on to even better their lead to 32 v 4. Nigel Hodgsons rink also had played some great bowls and had a lead of 10 shots, which made the game for the other two rinks a formality. Indeed late on, the other two rinks were probably guilty of lifting their foot off the pedal a little too much, and slipped to narrow defeats.

Holderness are now away to Bert Keech B.C. York, in the quarter final. This to be played on Sunday 10th August at 4pm

Mark Crowned County Champion
Mark victorious in county final.
July 20th

At the Yorkshire County finals day held at Kirkbymoorside B.C., Mark Goodfellow was crowned Yorkshire County 2 wood singles champion, defeating Paul Humphries (York RI Amateurs BC) 21 v 15 in a closely contested final.

On a green made for precise draw bowling, both competitors struggled with the wind early in the match, Mark more so, as at one point he found himself 10 v 4 down. As the conditions settled down it was Mark who found his rythm, and took the game by the scruff of the neck. He put his opponent under pressure with his first wood most ends in the later stages. Paul then unsuccessfully tried to use weight to get himself out of trouble, and this ultimately took its toll.

Mark now represents Yorkshire in the Northern Counties Bowls championships, to be held  over the weekend 30/31 August at Houghton Dairy Lane B.C., County Durham.

Trio Out in Controversial Triples Semi - Finals
Trio Crash out in contoversial tie.
JUNE 26th

The dream of Worthing this year for George Roberts, Cliff Holmes & Tim Winter, is over. They were comprehensively beaten at Kirkbymoorside on Tuesday night by Vinnie O'Neill Snr, Dennis Chapman & Vinnie O'Neill Jnr. Controversy still remains, as the Holderness trio should not have faced the triple from Middlesbrough Bowling Club in the semis. Disappointment for the Holderness lads, tinged with anger and confusion.

Mixed Fortunes for Holderness Quarter Finalists
Two through, two bow out in controversial quarter finals.
JUNE 21st

Tuesday night saw the Triples quarter finals at Kirkbymoorside BC. Holderness triple of Tony Chappell, Gary Whiting & Mark Goodfellow, saw their quest for reaching the National Championships at Worthing, Sussex, come to an end at he hands of Vinnie O'Neill (Middlesborough BC). Loosing by 7 shots 13 v 20, the difference being a bad start for the Holderness trio, being 7 down after 3 ends.
Better fortunes for the other triple of George Roberts, Cliff Holmes & Tim Winter beat another trio from Middlesbororugh BC, skipped by Ron Harris. They eased through with a comprehensive win 27 v 7, although being behind early doors, they then totally dominated the rest of the match to out power their opponents in every department.

The talking point came after the matches though, when it was discovered that the Quarter Final involving George, Cliff and Tim had been incorrectly played. They had played the wrong opponent, and so had the trio they should have played. Yorkshire County BA have informed the competitors from the two ties, that they will have to replay on Tuesday to the correct draw.

Thursday night saw Jim Moulds bow out of the County singles quarter finals against Scott Burrell (Nafferton BC). In a closely contested match, Jim was just edged out 21 v 17.

The following evening saw Mark Goodfellow reach the County Final of the Two Wood Singles, playing two matches on the same night.
In the first match Mark played Pete Amass (Marske BC) winning 21 v 10, easing ahead 12 v 0 the rest of the game remained comfortable. In the Semi Final another competitor from Marske BC, Craig Hodgson, provided the opposition after a good start from Mark , he found himself 4 shots adrift 10 v 6, after battling back to level scores, Mark then pulled further away to leave the later stages of the game a formality.
